How is Chit-Chat different from Duolingo or flashcard apps?
Apps like Duolingo teach you words. Chit-Chat is where you use them: a live, spoken, open-ended conversation with an AI character who listens, reacts and talks back in real time — the part of language learning most apps skip.
Do I need to type?
No. Chit-Chat is hands-free: just talk. It hears when you finish speaking, and you can interrupt whoever you’re talking to, just like a real conversation. A text box is there if you prefer to type.
Which languages can I practice?
Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Khmer, French, German, Arabic and Japanese — plus English with Eleanor from London. Each language has its own character with a personality, a hometown and a life story.
What if I’m a complete beginner?
Choose Beginner: the person you’re talking to uses one or two short sentences, speaks more slowly, and every sentence is captioned in their language and in English (with pinyin, rōmaji or romanization where it helps). You can answer in English while you build confidence.
How much does it cost?
Your first 5 minutes of conversation are free, with no card needed. After that, Pro is $25/month to talk as much as you like with everyone at the table, within a daily fair-use limit. Cancel any time.
What happens when my free minutes are up?
The clock only runs while you’re talking. When your 5 free minutes are used, Chit-Chat asks you to go Pro to keep the conversation going. Your lessons, saved words and settings stay in your browser either way.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes — in Chrome on Android and in Chrome, Edge or Safari on desktop. For the best experience use headphones so you can interrupt naturally.
Is my voice recorded?
Chit-Chat never receives or stores your audio. Your browser’s built-in speech recognition turns your voice into text (in Chrome and Edge this is processed by Google or Microsoft, in Safari by Apple), and only that text is sent to generate replies.
